  HİSTORY

MARMARIS CASTLE & MUSEUM

According to Heredot it was build in 3000 B.C. by the Ionians. It was restored during the period of Alexander the Great and was later enlarged by Suleyman the Magnificent in 1533. It was converted into a museum in 1984 and has been used for artistic performances.

Icmeler is thought to be established by the west Anatolian civilisation "Carians". We can only examine the history of Icmeler with Marmaris and Mugla. After the "Carians" in 3400 B.C. it was controlled by many nations.

They included Estians, Ionians, Dors, Lydians, Persians and Alexander The Great. It was then ruled by the Romans and Byzantians for a long time and administered by officials of Rhodes. Finally the region fell into the hands of the Turkish between 1280-1290. There are historical artifacts in this region which backup these claims although no in depth excavation has been conducted. Documents have been found about the area and have taught us that the oldest former names of this region of Icmeler are Yilaniye and Golenye.
     IBRAHIM AGA MOSQUE
With its domed structure, it is an attractive sample of Ottoman architecture. It was build in 1789 by the architect Ibrahim Aga. The mosque which is at the market is still a place of worship.
   KERVANSARAY (Caravanserai)
This was build in 1545 and another sample of Ottoman remains. It is a wide hall with seven rooms and is now used as a bazaar.
